What do you love about your life, Gerry Adams?
Fionn interviews Gerry Adams, a retired Irish Republican politician who was the president of Sinn Féin between 13 November 1983 and 10 February 2018, and served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Louth from 2011 to 2020. From 1983 to 1992 and from 1997 to 2011, he won election as a Member of Parliament (MP) of the UK Parliament for the Belfast West constituency, but followed the Sinn Féin policy of abstentionism. Adams first became involved in Irish republicanism in the late 1960s, and was an established figure in Irish activism for more than a decade before his 1983 election to Parliament. In 1984, Adams was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). From the late 1980s onwards, he was an important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process, entering into talks initially with Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume and then subsequently with the Irish and British governments. In 1986, he convinced Sinn Féin to change its traditional policy of abstentionism towards the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic of Ireland. In 1998, it also took seats in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Assembly. In 2005, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) stated that its armed campaign was over and that it was exclusively committed to peaceful politics. Adams announced in November 2017 that he would step down as leader of Sinn Féin in 2018, and that he would not stand for re-election to his seat in Dáil Éireann in 2020. Recorded at the Galway Film Fleadh, just before the showing of the documentary Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man. FIONNATHAN PRODUCTIONS is a project by a son and father team Fionn and Jonathan, intending to change the world, and have a good time while doing it. What do you love about your life, Mary Robinson?
Fionn interviews Mary Robinson, Irish Independent politician who served as the seventh President of Ireland, becoming the first woman to hold this office. She also served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002 and a Senator for the University of Dublin from 1969 to 1989. She first rose to prominence as an academic, barrister and campaigner. She defeated Fianna Fáil's Brian Lenihan and Fine Gael's Austin Currie, in the 1990 presidential election, becoming the first Independent candidate nominated by the Labour Party, the Workers' Party and Independent Senators. She was the first elected President in the office's history not to have had the support of Fianna Fáil. She is widely regarded as a transformative figure for Ireland, and for the Irish presidency, revitalising and liberalising a previously conservative, low-profile political office. She resigned the presidency two months ahead of the end of her term of office to take up her post in the United Nations. During her UN tenure she visited Tibet (1998), the first High Commissioner to do so; she criticised Ireland's immigrant policy; and criticised the use of capital punishment in the United States. She extended her intended single four-year term by a year to preside over the World Conference against Racism 2001 in Durban, South Africa; the conference proved controversial. Under continuing pressure from the U.S., Robinson resigned her post in September 2002. After leaving the UN in 2002, Robinson formed Realizing Rights: the Ethical Globalization Initiative, which came to a planned end at the end of 2010. Its core activities were 1) fostering equitable trade and decent work, 2) promoting the right to health and more humane migration policies, and 3) working to strengthen women's leadership and encourage corporate social responsibility. The organisation also supported capacity building and good governance in developing countries. Robinson returned to live in Ireland at the end of 2010, and has set up The Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice, which aims to be 'a centre for thought leadership, education and advocacy on the struggle to secure global justice for those many victims of climate change who are usually forgotten - the poor, the disempowered and the marginalised across the world.' Robinson is Chairman of the Institute for Human Rights and Business and Chancellor of the University of Dublin. Since 2004, she has also been Professor of Practice in International Affairs at Columbia University, where she teaches international human rights. Robinson also visits other colleges and universities where she lectures on human rights. Robinson sits on the board of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, an organisation which supports good governance and great leadership in Africa, and is a member of the Foundation's Ibrahim Prize Committee. Robinson is also a B Team Leader, alongside Richard Branson, Jochen Zeitz and a group of leaders from business and civil society as part of The B Team. Robinson is an Extraordinary Professor in the Centre for Human Rights and the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender at the University of Pretoria.[8] Robinson served as Oxfam's honorary president from 2002 until she stepped down in 2012 and is honorary president of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation EIUC since 2005. She is Chairman of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and is also a founding member and chairman of the Council of Women World Leaders. Robinson was a member of the European members of the Trilateral Commission. In 2004, she received Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience Award for her work in promoting human rights. Recorded at the launch of her new book, Climate Justice, at Kenny's Bookstore and Art Gallery in Galway, October, 2018. What do you love about your hip hop life, Fionn?
After interviewing the rappers in The SugarHill Gang, Fionn is invited onstage during the performance of their signature song. What a great experience - Fionn's life just keeps getting better! The Sugarhill Gang are an American hip hop group, known mostly for its 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight," the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song uses an interpolation of the instrumental track from the hit "Good Times" by Chic as its foundation. What Do You Love About Your Life?
The first cut of a project we are working on, asking people one simple question. This was shown to 160 people at the Tour de Munster dinner on 8th August, 2013. Tour de Munster has provided over €1,000,000 to support the community affected by Down Syndrome. After completing this video, we have continued to ask this question. We have now nearly one hundred other interviews uploaded, including a number of celebrity interviews. Come check out our What Do You Love About Your Life? Channel. And if you want to follow our latest adventures, you are welcome to visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Fionnathan

Fionn loves everything about his life. And he is interested in what you love. So he's interviewing people everywhere, from every walk of life, asking the question, "What do you love about your life?"
Often, it seems, when people answer Fionn's question, they appreciate all that's good about their lives a little bit more. We hope that watching these videos will help you feel the same.
It all started here: spreading the good word about Down syndrome.
We wanted to lend support to an amazing event that raises more money for the Down syndrome community in Ireland than any other, the Tour de Munster. Realising that many of the cyclists/fundraisers had only a distant relationship with Down syndrome, we thought we’d use our film making talents to somehow bridge the gap, and send the athletes a love letter.
With the help of our local community, we interviewed people with Down syndrome around County Clare, and showed them doing things. Because we wanted to include people of all types and abilities, we wanted to keep the interview simple. Jonathan asked Fionn to decide what question we could ask, and Fionn came up with the best interview question in the world:
What do you love about your life?
This is an important question for all of us to consider.
That was the beginning of what is now a six year long project. We interview people that we are find interesting. Often they have lived lives practicing a career that Fionn is considering pursuing himself. More than 100 of the 600 interviewees so far are famous enough as to have a wikipedia page devoted to them.
After recently presenting some of these videos as part of a fundraising event – to help cover the healthcare costs of a man with Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s – an audience member reflected that typically people spend so much time focused on what we don’t love in our lives, working to change those things, that we forget to appreciate all that we do love in our lives. That’s what this is about, a reminder to practice gratitude, and a means of encouraging a sense of connectedness.
We would like you to nominate notable people, your neighbours and friends that you feel should be included in our project. Talk to them about this project, and if they are interested, let us know. Tell us also what makes them special, in your eyes. We'll add them to our worldwide list.
Also, we want to extend an invitation to send in your own videos. This project can be taken up by individuals, by school classes, community groups, etc. The video should include the name of the interviewer and interviewee, and a short biographical sketch of each person – whatever you’d like to include to tell people about yourselves. You could send the video to our email account at fionnathan.productions@gmail.com using WeTransfer.com.
Feel free to upload a video, telling us what you love about your life.
